Research topics

 

Microbial enzymes: isolation, purification, properties, biological role. Microbial transformation of steroid compounds. Biological active substances of microbial and synthetic origin- antimicrobial activity, mechanisms of action.  Microbial surfactants (biosurfactants) – biosynthesis, isolation, purification, physical chemical properties; effect on microbial cell surface and properties; application in medical, pharmacological and environmental biotechnologies. Characterization and biosynthetic potential of new mesophilic and psychrophilic/psychrotolerant bacteria and yeasts isolated from extreme ecological niches for synthesis of enzymes, antimicrobials, etc. Microbial degradation of aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons – environmental pollutants. 

 

    Current Projects

     

   Microbial diversity in the Magoura cave, Bulgaria, and conservation of the unique rock paintings. Grant DDVU 02/73-2010, NSF.

     

      Biodiversity of Antarctic microbial communities and their adaptation to extreme environmental conditions. Grant DNTS Ukraine 01/1-2012, NSF.

     

Production of biological active substances of microbial and synthetic origin for pharmaceutical preparations, wastes bioutilization and biotechnological industry

 

  • Achievements

     

                 A new bacterial strain representing novel species, Myroides guanonis, was isolated from prehistoric guano paintings in Magura Cave, Bulgaria.
