ОСНОВНИ ТЕМИ:
  •  Antimicrobial photodynamic efficiency of novel phthalocyanine complexes and cationic porphyrins towards Gram-positive and Gram-negative dental pathogenic bacteria.
  •  Antifungal and antibacterial effect of natural products of plant, microbial and algal origin, as well as screening of newly synthesized compounds

ПРОЕКТИ:
  • Water-soluble Phthalocyanines for Fluorescence Diagnosis and Photodynamic Therapy. Joint Research Project TUBITAK – BAS, No: 212M053, Gebze Institute of Technology, Turkey
  • New ecotechnologies for biodegradation of organic waste with hydrogen and methane production, DFNI-E02/13, Project coordinator: I. Simeonov, PhD

ПОСТИЖЕНИЯ:
  • Water soluble tetra- and octa-methylpyridyloxy-substituted phthalocyanine Ga(III) complexes (GaPc1 and GaPc2) were prepared. The compounds are non-aggregated in aqueous solution and appear to be a good prospect for photodynamic therapy. Cellular uptake and photoinactivation ability towards different bacteria species, namely the Gram-positive methicillin-resistant S. aureus and E. faecalis, the Gram-negative P. aeruginosa, and, in addition, the fungus C. albicans, all in planktonic phase and biofilms were confirmed. The susceptibility of C. albicans biofilm to PDT with GaPc2 and ZnPcMe suggests a potential value of the both complexes for treatment of denture associated infections.
  • Two novel cationic porphyrins bearing pyridinium (PyP) and imidazolium (ImP) substituents were synthesized and investigated for their utility as PDT sensitizers for inactivation of the Gram-negative and the Gram-positive periodontal pathogenic bacteria associated with dental infections. The complete penetration of PyP and ImP into biofilms with high photodynamic efficacy suggests their promising application as photosensitizers for targeting oral pathogens such as E. faecalis, A. actinomicetemcomitans and F. nucleatum.
  • In vitro activity of nine cyanobacterial and ten microalgal newly isolated or culture collection strains against eight significant food-borne pathogens has been evaluated and compared. Water extracts and culture liquids of Gloeocapsa sp. and Synechocystis sp. demonstrated the widest spectrum of activity. Gloeocapsa sp. and Synechocystis sp. and especially their exopolysaccharides showed the most promising potential against the examined food pathogens.
