The Institut Pasteur de Dakar and CEPI, partners for access to vaccination in Africa
 
 
 
 
In January, the Institut Pasteur de Dakar and the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI) announced a 10-year partnership in which CEPI will invest up to $50 million. This collaboration aims to advance equitable access to vaccines in Africa and contribute to the African Union’s goal of increasing African manufacturers’ share of vaccine supply to the continent to 60% by 2040.

Putting biodiversity to good use for health

With more than 3,200 native species, the New Caledonian territory represents a considerable source of natural bioactive substances. Researchers from the Institut Pasteur de Nouvelle-Calédonie have shown that X. pancheri leaf extract has antibacterial activity and that C. forsteri or Arnica kana extracts have anti-inflammatory activities on human macrophages by inhibiting different inflammatory mediators.
 
 
Hepatitis B: towards better treatment for infected individuals in Africa

With 82 million people currently infected in Africa, the hepatitis B virus represents a major health threat. Early treatment can considerably reduce the risk of complications associated with the disease. In a recent analysis, scientists challenged the suitability of the diagnostic tests used in sub-Saharan Africa and called for more optimized treatment for local populations.

Three new species of mosquitoes discovered

Researchers from the Institut Pasteur de la Guyane have characterized three new species of mosquitoes following a mission to study the biodiversity of the Réserve Naturelle Nationale de La Trinité. They report the morphological characteristics and genetic signature of these three new species.

To implement their scientific strategy, create new scientific synergies and boost the existing ones, the Pasteur Network and the Institut Pasteur support the creation of Pasteur Joint International Research Units (PIU). It is a “Virtual Unit” created for 5 years and brings together research teams belonging to up to three international research institute or university whereof at least one belongs to the Pasteur Network.

ISIDORe - Vector-borne pathogens and their vectors call for proposals
Deadline for pre-applications: as long as funding remains available.
 
The ISIDORe consortium supports scientists with an interest in the following causative agents and vectors of these fast-spreading diseases: Rift valley fever virus, Zika virus, Chikungunya virus, West Nile virus, Dengue virus, Japanese encephalitis virus, Yellow fever virus, Tick-borne encephalitis virus, Plasmodium, B. burgdorferi, Leishmania. Researchers are invited to submit any proposal that requires access to at least one of the ISIDORe services, and falls under one of the sections highlighted on the calls webpage.
