On May 10, 2024, a delegation from the University of Science and Technology in Nanjing, China, visited the Stefan Angelov Institute of Microbiology to sign an Agreement for Academic Cooperation between the two scientific organizations. On the Bulgarian side, the Agreement was signed by Prof. Penka Petrova, Director of the Institute of Microbiology, and on the Chinese side by Prof. Jun Zhang, Chairman of the University Council.
The Institute of Microbiology at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences is a partner with the Faculty of Automation of the University of Science and Technology in Nanjing in the execution of the project “Experimental Research, Modeling, Monitoring, and Extremum-Seeking Optimal Intelligent Technologies for the Management of a Two-Phase Process of Anaerobic Biodegradation of Lignocellulosic Waste with Hydrogen and Methane Production.” The project is led by Prof. Ludmila Kabaivanova from the Bulgarian side and Prof. Haoping Wang from the Chinese side, and it is funded by the Bulgaria-China Bilateral Cooperation Program of the Science Research Fund (KP-06-IP-CHINA/3).
Other guests at the Institute of Microbiology included Prof. Lianfa Bai, Dean of the Faculty of Electronics and Optical Engineering; Prof. Haoping Wang, Deputy Dean of the Sino-French Engineering Faculty; and Prof. Liang Li, Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Physics. Prof. Neli Koseva, Chief Scientific Secretary of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, presented the activities of the Academy and the opportunities for collaborations. Also present at the meeting were Corr. Mem. Prof. Nina Atanasova, Scientific Secretary of the Division “Biomedicine and Quality of Life”; Prof. Tsvetanka Babeva, Director of the Institute of Optical Materials and Technologies; and Assoc. Prof. Tatyana Kutsarova, Director of the Institute of Electronics, along with other guests and scientists who have specialized in China. During the visit, Prof. Penka Petrova, Director of the Institute of Microbiology, and Prof. Ludmila Kabaivanova, Deputy Director of the Institute of Microbiology, discussed with the representatives of the Chinese delegation the progress of the project and the opportunities for expanding bilateral scientific cooperation.
