Prof. Milen Georgiev is among the top 1% of scientists in the world for 2025 according to the Stanford ranking

Three researchers from the Stefan Angelov Institute of Microbiology at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences are featured among the top two percent of scientists worldwide. Prof. Milen Georgiev is in the top 1% of scientists in the world for 2025, while Acad. Atanas Pavlov and Prof. Yulia Serkedzhieva are ranked in the top 2% according to this year’s career-long impact ranking of scientists (known as the Stanford ranking). In total, 57 scientists from the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences are included in the ranking.

Prof. Milen Georgiev is head of the “Metabolomics” Laboratory at the Department of Biotechnology of the Institute, and his main research directions and scientific contributions are in the field of plant biotechnology. He is co-editor and member of the editorial boards of a dozen international journals in the fields of biotechnology and natural product chemistry. He is a driving force behind the organization of the International Conference on Natural Products Utilization: from Plant to Pharmacy Shelf (ICNPU). This year, the sixth edition of the conference was held in Bansko with the participation of scientists from around the world.

Acad. Atanas Pavlov has been part of the scientific staff of the Institute of Microbiology since 2013. His scientific work is in the field of applied biotechnology. His main contributions are in the following areas: biologically active compounds from plant in vitro systems with applications in the food, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical industries; novel and non-traditional bioreactor systems for cultivating plant in vitro systems; and cell agronomy.

Prof. Yulia Serkedzhieva has been a long-standing member of the scientific team of the Department of Virology. Her scientific interests and contributions are in the field of medical and biomolecular chemistry.
