CURENT RESEARCH TOPICS:
  • The main research field of the group is the mathematical modeling and optimization of different microbiological processes. The main studied process is the anaerobic biodegradation (ABD) of organic materials and especially organic wastes from different sources. The studied raw materials are from agriculture (energy crops, animal manure, algae and others), food industry (fruits, vegetables, meat, milk byproducts and others), and urban waste (activated sludge). The main area of interest of the team is production of biogas (methane and hydrogen) from organic wastes by ABD in different types of bioreactors and searching for the factors that influence the ABD processes. Best values of these factors are searched after that.
  • Another topic that is examined by the group is developing of technologies for ABD of organic wastes along with the ways of intensification of the processes by different pretreatment methods and additives. The laboratory results are used for mathematical modelling and optimization of the ABD processes. On the basis of these models, software sensors are developed in collaboration with French colleagues.
  • The group has developed a small pilot-scale biogas plant, where software sensors and sophisticated strategies for bioreactor control are tested. The plant has SCADA system based on PC and industrial PLC controller. An upgrade of pilot-scale biogas plant is planned to make it a two-phase cascade system for simultaneously production of biohydrogen and biomethane.
  • The team holds one patent (№ 110699) and one utility model (№ 1814) since 2010 and 2014 respectably.
